Former Swindon striker Christian Roberts believes ex-Spurs No.2 Gus Poyet would be a 'fantastic' appointment as the club's new manager to replace the recently departed Maurice Malpas.

Roberts was a part of the Town squad when Poyet worked as Dennis Wise's assistant in 2006, before the ex-Chelsea pair moved on to Leeds, and he is convinced the 41-year-old Uruguayan would be a huge success at the County Ground.

A number of names have been linked with post, including John Ward, Ian Holloway and Steve Cotterill, but Roberts said: "I can't say if Gus would be interested or not because, although we're good friends, we haven't discussed anything like that.

"But what I would say is that he is an absolute gent in the football industry and I haven't got enough praise for him. Gus hasn't got a bad bone in his body and taking a job like Swindon would be a great challenge for him.

"If he's going to put his name in the frame or if the board are going at approach him, then I think that would be a fantastic move. He's a top class coach and it would be a wonderful opportunity for him.

"He's obviously spent a few years as an assistant under Dennis and at Tottenham and if he wants to go it alone then I've no doubts he will be a great appointment."

Desire to return

Since leaving White Hart Lane last month, Poyet has spoken of his desire to return to the game as a manager in his own right and Swindon chairman Andrew Fitton has hinted that he would be willing to consider a candidate with a similar CV to that of Poyet's.

"What's the chance that something comes completely out of left-field," said Fitton. "There are a couple of ex-players who are interested in following what the likes of Roberto Di Matteo and Gianfranco Zola have done."

However, Fitton did reveal that, as yet, Poyet has not formally applied for the position. He added: "Poyet has not applied for the job but if he did, he is one of those you would feel you would have to have a conversation with."
