Grimsby boss Mike Newell admits he was close to tempting Warren Feeney to Blundell Park before Leeds entered the race for the Northern Ireland front man.

Feeney has been told he can leave Cardiff and after spending last season on loan and was in talks with Grimsby before Simon Grayson stepped in with the offer of a deal at Elland Road.

"I did have a number of conversations with Warren and he was interested in a move here - he was seriously considering it," Newell told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph.

"He didn't dismiss it out of hand, but when Leeds showed an interest, it was hard for us to compete with their financial resources.

"Had we been able to get to their level, we would have had a good chance of signing Warren, but ultimately it was difficult for us to match them.

"It shows the intent of the club, though, that we are looking at players to improve our squad that are capable of taking us to that next level.”

"Cardiff have given permission for another club to sign me. Leeds United are a massive club and I am excited," said Feeney.
