Chris Turner has threatened to wield the axe after another defeat at Colchester left them embroiled in a relegation battle.

A 2-0 loss in Essex left Turner fuming and admitting some players had been given one chance too many. Pool conceded three penalties, two of which were converted by Kevin Lisbie.

“You learn a lot about your players after a game like that,’’ he told the Northern Echo. “There’ll be changes next Saturday I would think.

“I’ve got a good squad of players and I’ve got players who are wanting to be in the team and think they should be in the team.

“When we’ve gone away from home and not conceded a goal, why fix something that’s not broke. It broke on Saturday and we’ve got to have the emphasis on the attack at home.

“I think the players have had a good run in the team. Some players will now come in on Saturday and it’s up to them to keep the shirt.”

Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd was able to celebrate his first win as U’s boss, and said: “We caused them a few problems with our crosses into the box, but on another day we could have been one-nil down, so that's something we have to look at.

"We always knew Hartlepool would be a threat on the counter-attack and it was far from comfortable. I thought that was a difficult game, but we made it a little bit more difficult than it should have been at times."
