Jeff Hughes pushed Stockport a step nearer the League One trapdoor as his first-half goal saw Bristol Rovers secure a 1-0 win in a dire game.
The goal was a nightmare for County left-back Adam Griffin whose mis-hit pass across his own penalty area left Hughes with time and space to drill home a low left-footed shot on the half-hour mark.
It was one of few clear chances in a poor quality game, with Stockport's best opportunities falling to midfielder David Poole, who had a first-half shot saved by Rhys Evans and a late effort blocked by Byron Anthony.
Poole's misery was complete when he was sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time and although Stockport worked hard throughout, they lacked the quality to ease their relegation fears.
