Scunthorpe’s star striker Gary Hooper will be in even bigger demand if he shines at Wembley in the League One play-off final this weekend.

The 21-year-old has scored 30 goals for the Iron this season and has been linked with a host of high-profile clubs, to which manager Nigel Adkins has adopted a pragmatic approach.

"Whatever happens, happens," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "We've all got to go out there with the desire to be the best that we can be. If somebody shows an interest in Gary Hooper, he's under contract, and Scunthorpe United will benefit from that.

"Gary will benefit because he's doing well for this football club and in the long-term for his future, as has Billy Sharp, Andy Keogh, Jermaine Beckford and Martin Paterson (all of whom have moved on from Scunthorpe)."

Joe Murphy

Whilst Hooper will be trying to net goals, shot-stopper Joe Murphy will be trying to shut up shop and keep a clean sheet.

The Iron have beaten Millwall twice in the regular season but Murphy admits that won’t count for anything once the whistle blows on Sunday.

"It is going to be a tough game. I know we've beaten Millwall twice this season, but that's out of the window. It means nothing now,” he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"This is a cup final, and it's great for the supporters because if we go up we could be playing against sides that have come down from the Premier League next season.

"It's a life-changing thing for the supporters as much as the players, going to bigger grounds and playing teams with much bigger wage budgets.

"It's a brilliant experience and we're only one step away from getting the chance to do it again.

"I think we were unfortunate to get relegated last year, so to bounce back straight away would be superb for a club like Scunthorpe.

“The gaffer has to get a lot of praise for what we've achieved. This club hasn't enjoyed this level of success before and he deserves a lot of credit. We've got a great team spirit and we get on so well. All the players are prepared to work so hard for each other.”
