Defender Patrick Kanyuka is ready to take his second chance in football and earn a long-term contract with Northampton.

The 22-year-old had been without a club since a knee operation in May after he rejected a month-by-month deal at Swindon, and admits he is fortunate to have been given a short-term deal with the Cobblers.

"I rejected the deal at Swindon as I was looking for something more permanent but then things got difficult," said Kanyuka. "I was on trial at Southampton, and their manager got sacked, then I was offered a deal at Motherwell but I failed a medical."

"I went to train at Lilleshall for a few weeks to build up my fitness and when I came back everyone had a full squad so I was in the wilderness.

"It was difficult then to get a chance anywhere so I am very grateful to Northampton for giving me this chance and I have got to take it."
