On Saturday Crewe won their first game back in Division One by beating an impressive Ipswich side 1-0. In a game of many chances, for both teams, it took a splendid free-kick from Kenny Lunt to register the first three points of the new season for Crewe. After the game Brian Beard spoke to the Alex scorer.

Q:IT MUST BE NICE TO GET YOUR FIRST POINTS ON THE BOARD?

A:I thought we were a bit unlucky last week against Wimbledon so I am delighted we managed to get the three points against Ipswich.

Q:AND OBVIOUSLY HAPPY THAT YOUR FREE-KICK PROVED DECISIVE?

A:We've been practising set-pieces a lot in training and I think we probably need to work on them a bit more, which I am sure we will. But luckily for us this one went in and we've got our first win.

Q:DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU DIDN'T MAKE THE MOST OF THE OTHER CHANCES YOU CREATED?

A:I thought both teams had chances but I think we should have maybe finished one or two of the openings that fell to us but in the end we got the goal and I think we thoroughly deserved the three points.

Q:A GREAT CONFIDENCE BOOSTER BEATING A TIME OF IPSWICH'S QUALITY?

A:I think every game in this division is going to be hard and I think Ipswich will be up near the top, come the end of the season. They are a quality team with quality players and the pressure they put on us showed that but our keeper Clayton Ince was in great form.

Q:A FIRST WIN OF THE CAMPAIGN AND AT HOME. DO YOU FEEL GRESTY ROAD IS WHERE YOU MUST PICK UP THE BULK OF YOUR POINTS THIS SEASON?

A:Obviously we are going to try and pick points up wherever we can but with the home crowd shouting us on it will prove hard for teams to come here and get something. That can only benefit us.

Q:ON A PERSONAL FRONT YOU PLAYED RIGHT SIDE AGAINST IPSWICH BUT IN THE PAST IT`S BEEN MORE CENTRAL FOR YOU. ARE YOU HAPPY TO PLAY WIDER?

A:We had 11 players out there today and we needed them to all play well and that's what happened. I'll play wherever it's felt necessary for me to operate.

Q:HOW DID THE IPSWICH GAME COMPARE TO WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED IN DIVISION TWO?

A:I think this division is going to get harder and harder each year. You only have to look at the teams that have come down from the Premiership, like West Ham and Sunderland. It's only going to get tougher so we have to keep improving so we can stay up.

Q:IT MUST HAVE BEEN FRUSTRATING THAT CREWE WERE GETTING LOADS OF CHANCES, IN OPEN PLAY, BUT WERE UNABLE TO PUT THEM AWAY?

A:I think with the chances that both sides had it could have been 2-2 or even more but as long as we are creating the chances there's always the possibility of converting them and getting the points. As a team you can't afford to let your heads drop and we didn't which is why we ended up with the win.
