League One: wins for Scunny, Swans and Terriers - that's Shaily's treble chance this week

By Mark Shail  September 15, 2006

SCUNTHORPE v CHELTENHAM

Scunthorpe haven't had the results their performances have warranted so far this season, but that all changed in midweek when Brian Laws' men registered an impressive 3-0 home victory against high-flying Port Vale.

Defender Steve Foster is struggling with a broken nose though, but he could still feature, while experienced striker Steve Torpey is expected to keep his place in the starting line-up alongside Billy Sharp.

Laws will be looking for his side to string together back-to-back wins at Glanford Park against a Cheltenham side depleted by injuries. Influential midfielder JJ Melligan is ruled out with an ankle problem, while striker Kayode Odejayi has a similar injury and Steven Gillespie, Shane Duff, Ashley Vincent and Michael Townsend are all continued absentees.

SHAILY'S VERDICT: With Cheltenham beset by a long injury list, Scunthorpe have to be favourites to make it two wins on the trot.

GILLINGHAM v SWANSEA

Consecutive victories against Doncaster and Millwall have seen a timely return to form for Ronnie Jepson's side, but the Gills have been forced to step up their search for a central defender after Brent Sancho was ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury. The Trinidad and Tobago World Cup star was forced off at half time in Saturday's 2-1 win at Belle View and scans have shown that the injury is worst than first thought.

A brace from Leon Knight helped Swansea to a 2-0 victory against Brentford on Tuesday night and there are definite signs that Kenny Jackett's team are starting to find the consistency that took them to the play-off final last term. That win lifted the Swans to fourth and the visitors could have striker Lee Trundle available again after he missed the trip to Griffin Park, although Jackett may opt to stick with in-form Knight.

Owain Tudor-Jones and Garry Monk both remained sidelines while the pair recover from knee injuries.

SHAILY'S VERDICT: After a slow start to the campaign, Swansea are now firing on all cylinders and I can see the visitors having too much firepower for improving Gillingham.

HUDDERSFIELD v YEOVIL

Nine points from their first eight league matches is not the start Huddersfield were hoping for and manager Peter Jackson has been frustrated with his side's displays in recent weeks - including a goalless draw against Doncaster in midweek on the back of a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham.

The Terriers could welcome back midfielder Andy Holdsworth, who has missed the last two games due to a bout of shingles but Jon Worthington, Chris Brandon and Adnan Ahmed are all ruled out.

Yeovil loan signing Marcus Stewart returns to his former club hoping to continue his fine form since arriving on a short-term deal from Bristol City. The 33-year-old, who joined Huddersfield from Bristol Rovers for £1.2 million in 1996, has scored twice in his first three matches since arriving at Huish Park.

Winger Ishmael Welsh is pushing for a starting place after his impressive display as a substitute in the draw against Northampton in midweek but right back Andy Lindegaard is still struggling with a groin injury so Mark Lynch could deputise.

SHAILY'S VERDICT: Huddersfield have not set the world alight so far but this looks like a good opportunity for the Terriers to get their promotion bid back on track – home win.
