Cheltenham boss Martin Allen has been left in no doubt by chairman Paul Baker that he expects a vastly-improved season. So does Allen.

"I'd be very disappointed if we weren't in the top half and pushing on towards the play-offs next season," Baker told the Gloucestershire Echo.

"The hope is that we can make some really good, positive signings in the close season and have a tight knit, energetic, hungry squad, ready for the new season and we can be challenging for promotion.

"I am feeling very positive and we have to make sure Martin has the players to do the job.

"I'd hope our wage budget will be more on a par with clubs in League Two than it was in League One, and therefore we should have every chance of acquitting ourselves very well.

"We will be conservative with our crowd estimates, with regard to our budget, but I am confident gates will be higher if we are riding high in League Two than they have been while we have been struggling in League One."

However, Allen has called the club’s supporters to act as his scouting network after his chief scout Alan Fettis was dispensed with by Cheltenham during their February cash-flow crisis.

"Due to a lack of scouting, I would be more than happy to receive any ideas and names of players for me to follow up," Allen said.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to reply to every letter or email, but the players must be out of contract for me to consider them."

Unorthodox Allen may be, but he has a proven track record of at least guiding teams to the play-offs and that is where Cheltenham will expect to be next season after this year’s chastening experience.
