Sheffield Wednesday stopper Nicky Weaver believes manager Gary Megson has made quality signings this summer.

The Owls have added Jose Semedo from Carlton Athletic and Julian Bennett from Nottingham Forest, enhancing their credentials as promotion contenders in Npower League One.

However, Weaver does have concerns over a lack of depth in the squad at Hillsbrough, an issue which the keeper felt was evident in the 2-0 friendly defeat against Barnsley.

“The lads we’ve brought in are quality players. We’ve definitely gone for quality rather than quantity with our signings, which is good,” said the 32-year-old.

“For the first time it was noticeable about the lack of numbers. We had a couple of people sitting out for different reasons but hopefully we’ll be able to add few to the squad soon."

Megson agrees with the veteran that his squad isn't completely prepared for the new campaign just yet, but the former West Brom boss believes the signs are looking good.

“Sometimes you have to take one step backwards to go two steps forward. We’ve had to do some things that timing wise aren’t ideal, but in the knowledge and the hope that it’s the right thing to do, because we could bring other people in and make ourselves stronger," said the manager.

“At this moment in time we’re not strong enough, but at this moment in time we’re playing Barnsley in a friendly.”
