Nows the time for Peter Reid to start worrying! Not only has he been given the fateful vote of confidence by his 'caring, consulting chairman, he now faces the most daunting of fixture programmes as he bids to lift Leeds out of the mire.
When it was announced that the Leeds boss had been called to a meeting with a concerned board this morning, the word on the street was that Reid would be on his way out, but chairman Dr John McKenzie emerged to confirm that there would be no more changes at the top.
Dr McKenzie said: "We are a caring, consulting club and we wanted to check out the views of the fans, the players and the shareholders, with the result that we have decided Peter Reid will stay on as team manager.
"Of course, we are concerned about our current league position – which is why I wanted to talk to Peter – and the fact that we are fantastic one week and pretty awful the next, but the meeting wasnt about the manager, it was about discussing how to address this situation.'
A statement from Leeds United PLC read: "Obviously everybody connected with Leeds United is concerned about the club's position in the Premier League table and the board has spent some considerable time considering all aspects of the situation.
"Our conclusion is that Peter Reid should remain as the team manager to lead the team's recovery performance."
Whilst Leeds have announced that Reids job is safe – for now - Blackburn Rovers have moved to dismiss the latest round of speculation linking manager Graeme Souness to the vacant managers chair at Tottenham.
Rovers chief executive John Williams told the club's official website: "It seems to be the re-kindling of an old story and I can only reiterate that we have had no approach from Spurs, nor would we welcome one.
"Quite the contrary, we would rebuff any approach. We want Graeme to remain here at Rovers. He continues to do a great job for us and is only just over one year into a new four-year contract.
"When the Spurs issue was raised on the eve of our trip to Turkey, Graeme dismissed the speculation and at no time has he intimated that he is anything but perfectly happy here at Ewood Park."
Sir Bobby Robson has also moved to quash rumours that hes set to quit Newcastle after stories had appeared in the press earlier in the week suggesting he had already resigned. Nothing could be further from the truth and Sir Bobby remains as committed as ever.
"The story was outrageous. The spin was tremendous and before you know it, it goes all over the world," said Robson. "This is a great football club, there's no doubt about that. We're a very fine team. You don't lose what you're good at over three years in six matches.
"We have high-quality players and there's a lot of character and resolve and yes, we have had a blip, yes, we haven't won in six games. We agree we've had a poor start but I would remind people that we're still in Europe, we're still in the FA Cup, we're still in the Carling Cup and we haven't been relegated."
It was good to see West Hams on loan striker Neil Mellor – son of PFA commercial executive Ian 'Spider Mellor – get off the mark on his new colours with two goals in the Hammers 3-0 win over Crystal Palace last night.
Caretaker boss Trevor Brooking said: "I was pleased for Neil, especially as he was going to get a rollicking for not squaring the ball to David, so he got himself out of trouble.
"Jermain and David get quite a lot of the headlines but we often play with a three, and psychologically it was good for him. It's important because Jermain is suspended for the next two so Mellor can go into those on the up.
"Without Jermain there it was important for him to get off the mark and he's got an opportunity now to add a few more to the list. Strikers like to see a few goals to their name."
