Joe Royle has paid a glowing tribute to departed Oldham winger Andy Liddell, who left Boundary Park on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old, who scored 33 times in 144 appearances for the Latics, will look for a new club after leaving by mutual consent, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

"I wish I worked with Andy 10 years ago," Royle told the club's official website.

"He was still the best technician on the books at the age of 35. He is a fantastic professional and has been a great lad to have around the place," he added.

"I sincerely wish I could have given him more games and have told him I will gladly give him any references he needs.

"Andy would be ideal for any club out there that needs experience and talent. I would like to thank him for all he has done on behalf of the club."
