Southend boss Steve Tilson fears winger Damian Scannell will miss the Shrimpers' opening-day clash with Huddersfield a week on Saturday due to injury.

Winger Scannell was substituted after only 23 minutes of his first game in pre-season following a heavy challenge in a 2-0 defeat against Dagenham on Saturday.

Tilson told the club's official website: "It was a bad tackle on Damian and his ankle is massive now."

He added: "It's really swollen up and although we don't know how long he is going to be out for, I would be amazed if he was fit enough for our first game against Huddersfield, which is obviously disappointing for me and for him."

The Southend boss also revealed he is yet to make a decision on whether to pursue his interest in trialists Andrew Pearson, Harry Worley, Brian Saah and Maceo Rigters.
