Scunthorpe are ready to rise again

But they need to enjoy another successful Wembley visit first

Scunthorpe Chairman Steve Wharton is adamant the Iron are ready to become a bona fide Championship club – as long as they overcome Millwall.

Scunny suffered an immediate relegation last year after celebrating promotion in 2007 to the second tier of English football.

However, Scunthorpe like to upset the odds and whilst most people were predicting a Leeds-MK Dons play-off final they are both left licking their wounds.

Instead, Scunthorpe make the long trip to Wembley for the second time in the space of two months after losing 3-2 against Luton in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy earlier this season.

And Wharton is adamant that they can establish themselves in the Championship. "Getting back into the Championship would mean extra revenue and make life much easier for us as a club,” he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"If we do beat Millwall on Sunday and get promoted, then it's another challenge for us. This time we have a bit more experience of being at that level and are a little wiser.

"To get there and stay there is a tall order for a club from a small town like Scunthorpe. But I think we can show we can do it within the means that we can afford.

"Promotion has always been our main priority. How much would it mean for us to get straight back into the Championship? Well in financial terms I honestly do not know. But what it means to the club is immeasurable.”
