Brighton climbed out of the relegation zone with a vital 2-1 away win at out-of-form Charlton.

The Seagulls continue to frustrate the teams at the top of League One having held both Leeds and Huddersfield to draws in recent weeks.

Inigo Calderon scored the opener eight minutes before the break with a clinical counter-attack before Elliott Bennett completed the victory late on.

The Addicks fought hard to garner something from the battle on a rain-sodden pitch, but failed to convert a host of chances - with David Mooney the most guilty.

Brighton's on-loan striker Kazenga LuaLua fired just wide inside three minutes after creating space down the left.

Calderon's goal followed a frenzy of action in the Brighton penalty area. Akpo Sodje and Therry Racon had their shots blocked on the line for Charlton after some good work by Johnnie Jackson.

The visitors immediately broke with great speed and Gary Dicker fed over-lapping Calderon down the right to fire beyond Rob Elliott.

A last-gasp Tommy Elphick block denied Mooney an equaliser ten minutes after the restart.

The impressive Bennett doubled the visitors lead with a fine 25-yard drive 12 minutes from time after Elliott failed to clear his lines.

Sodje responded with a late consolation in injury time but the home fans greeted the final whistle with boos.
