Jonjo Shelvey has admitted the lure of learning his trade was the reason he stayed at Charlton Athletic this summer.

The teenage sensation’s form was monitored after breaking into the first team last season with a bang, but he insists a move away from The Valley was never a possibility.

“I’ve never wanted to leave Charlton,” the 17-year-old told the South London Press.

“Towards the end of the transfer window there was a chance that I could have gone to Birmingham or Stoke but I didn’t want to go to either of those places and play reserve football. That’s all I would have done.

"I wanted to stay here and play in the first team. That will give me the experience I need and provide me with a platform to build on.

“In time I think I would have got in the first team at those clubs but I wouldn’t have walked straight into the team.”
