Rochdale have signed former Preston defender Neal Trotman on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Deepdale.

Trotman said: "I just want to improve and I believe I'm at the right club to do that. There was interest from a couple of clubs and one of the things that swung it for me was the management team here."

He continued: "I've heard some very good things about them, their coaching methods and the way they want to play."

Trotman was released by Burnley as an 18-year-old and joined Oldham before earning a £500,000 move to Preston in January 2008.

Long-term injury halted his progression at Deepdale and he spent the remainder of his contract on loan at Colchester, Southampton, Huddersfield and then back at Oldham.
