Colchester goalkeeper Ben Williams is facing a race against time to be fit for the new season after suffering from a viral infection.

The 28-year-old fell ill during the club's pre-season trip to Holland and was subsequently sent home and admitted to hospital.

Manager John Ward is hopeful Williams will be discharged in the coming days and told the club's official website: "We wish Ben a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the club in the weeks to come."
