Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth scored in either half to give Colchester a 2-0 victory over rivals Southend in the Essex derby.

On a poor playing surface at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, Colchester took a third-minute lead in bizarre circumstances.

Wordsworth met Clive Platt's cross at the far post and the midfielder's scuffed low shot was missed by Southend skipper Adam Barrett on his own goal-line and the ball rolled in.

Colchester goalkeeper Ben Williams kept out Francis Laurent's header and at the other end, Southend keeper Steve Mildenhall palmed away Marc Tierney's swirling cross.

Scott Spencer and Laurent went close for Southend before half-time but Colchester doubled their lead in the 63rd minute.

The Blues failed to clear David Prutton's corner and after Kayode Odejayi had headed back across goal, Wordsworth tapped in from close range.

Williams saved from both Southend substitute Matt Paterson and Franck Moussa before Barrett had a goal chalked out, as the U's took the bragging rights.
