We were architects of our own downfall

Keith Alexander slammed his Macclesfield side after they were thumped 4-1 at Chesterfield.

The Silkmen were trailing 4-0 by the break and the final score leaves Macclesfield rooted in the relegation zone and Alexander fuming.

He said: "Football has a habit of kicking you in the teeth, but 4-0 at half time was unbelievable.

"I was disappointed with the first goal because I thought it was a yard offside, but we were very poor in the first half.

"We were architects of our own downfall. I don't think Chesterfield played any special football; they put the ball into the box three times and scored three goals.

"What disappointed me most was we have a good bunch of players who think they can pass the ball about well and try to play football, but, every time we got it, we gave it away.”

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan was understandably in a better frame of mind, and saud: “I think first half we did play really well and obviously to score four goals and possible score more.

"Performance wise we played very well, the most important thing was getting three points. The way we played if anyone was watching would have said we looked a quality side."
