Ben Muirhead came off the bench to score the decisive pebalty shoot-out goal to send Rochdale through to the play off final at Wembley. The former Manchester United player sent a packed Spotland wild when his penalty hit the back of the net. Now Dale have the chance to make a piece of history by winning promotion for the first time since 1969. Givemefootball's lawrie Madden caught up with Ben after their dramatic win against Darlington.
Q:
WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU STEPPED UP TO TAKE THE PENALTY?
A:
There were lots of things going on in my head. I thought about what if I missed which would mean the tie would go on longer. I also changed my mind at the last minute. Normally I place them but after seeing them miss a penalty I thought I would just hit it as hard as I could.
Q:
HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN THE BALL WENT IN?
A:
Well, the fans just ran onto the pitch and were celebrating. It was crazy really and hard to put into words. It hasn't really sunk in yet but the reaction of the fans showed how much it means to them.
Q:
AND A CHANCE TO CREATE A PIECE OF HISTORY?
A:
I think everyone is aware that Rochdale haven't won anything and this is a great opportunity to do something. It maybe an omen but it was the manager's birthday and we are all delighted for Keith Hill. But it's no good going to Wembley if you don't win.
Q:
HOW WILL THE YOUNG PLAYERS COPE WITH THE WEMBLEY EXPERIENCE?
A:
Yes we are a young side but because we are young we will not have any fear. We work very hard for each other and all our training is played at a very high tempo. I think we deserved the win over the two games even though it went to penalties.
Q:
WHAT HAS THE MANAGER BROUGHT TO THE TEAM?
A:
He has brought a winning mentality to the team which may not have always been here. He has brought in a lot of young players and showed belief in them. I think the side will only get better as we all have something to offer and prove.
Q:
AND WHAT ABOUT THE FINAL AGAINST LOCAL RIVALS STOCKPORT?
A:
To be honest it is a bit of a lottery in the play-off’ so you are not bothered who you play but Stockport at Wembley will give it a bit of an edge. We have played each other twice this season in the league so we know each other.
