A football players life is a nomadic existence, but Marc Edworthy admits it is time to start laying down some roots.

The 36-year-old defender has enjoyed a much travelled career taking in stops at Plymouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry, Norwich, Leicester, Derby and now Burton Albion.

Currently residing in the East Midlands, it is a long way from his original home for Edworthy, but he insists it is time to plan for the future when his boots will be hung up.

He is halfway through his month long contract at Burton Albion, and after a summer of uncertainty he's enjoying his new lease of life at the Pirelli Stadium.

However, he admits I would take a seismic offer for him to uproot his family at this stage of his life.

“If something came along that I really couldn’t refuse then I would certainly commute,” said Edworthy.

“However, my kids are now settled in school and my family is settled in the area and it isn’t fair to uproot them again.

“They have followed me around during my entire career so there comes a time when you have to put them first.

“I am pretty open minded about what I will do when I finally stop playing, as I think this will probably be my last season. I am involved in a property development company so there could well be possibilities in that area as there are no guarantees in terms of coaching.

“I will be looking to take my badges, but I know it is a competitive field so you can’t expect to walk straight into a job.”

There is still plenty of footballing life left in Edworthy at present, as he is displaying with his performances at Burton Albion during their inaugural campaign in the Football League.

Twenty years in professional football is a good achievement by anyone’s standards, and he intends to bow out on a high.

“I still feel good in myself and very fit,” he continued.

“The one person you can’t fool is yourself and as a full-back you are constantly exposed to 1 v 1 situations against a winger.

“I know I can still cope with that and if I felt my standards were dropping then I would be the first to hold my hands up.

“But I feel as strong as ever and hopefully I can continue to play for Burton for the rest of this campaign.”
