After a bitterly disappointing start to the campaign, Wrexham have managed to haul themselves out of the bottom three with two victories in their last three games against Lincoln and Accrington Stanley. That 2-0 success against Stanley came courtesy of a brace from Neil Roberts and, speaking after that result, manager Brian Carey is confident his side have now turned the corner. Striker Eifion Williams made a welcome return to first team action on Friday when making a late substitute's appearances for the Welsh outfit after missing the last three games with a calf injury. However, as givemefootball's Mark Shail found out, the 31-year-old former Torquay and Hartlepool front man is aware he faces a battle on his hands to force himself into the starting line-up.
Q:THE PLAYERS MUST HAVE BEEN DELIGHTED WITH THAT WIN ON FRIDAY NIGHT?
A:At the end of the day it was an excellent team display. It was a great performance after the defeat against Chesterfield (a game in which they were beaten 4-0 by the in-form Spireites). The players did a good job and showed just what they can do.
Q:I SUPPOSE IT COULD BE TOUGH TO CLAIM A PLACE IN THE SIDE AFTER A DISPLAY LIKE THAT?
A:The lads did well and just because I'm available again doesn't mean I will play. It's a case of biding my time, which I have been doing this season. You have to wait for your turn to come. And if the lads play like they did on Friday night it could be a long wait.
Q:YOU MUST BE HOPEFUL THE SIDE CAN NOW PUT THOSE EARLY-SEASON TROUBLES BEHIND YOU?
A:Yes, we have got some good players here and although we lost against Chesterfield, we've won two of our last three games so it hasn't been a bad week. Everyone is upbeat but one result does not mean we are there. It was a step in the right direction but there is still a long way to go.
Q:HOW DID YOU SUSTAIN YOUR CALF INJURY?
A:I took a kick (in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first-round game against Macclesfield) and at first they thought it was a tear. It was only a strain but it still took a few weeks to clear up. It was very uncomfortable for the first few days but hopefully that's all behind me now.
Q:AFTER THE INJURY IT MUST HAVE BEEN NICE TO GET BACK ON THE PITCH AGAINST ACCRINGTON?
A:Yes, it was good to be back in the squad and back involved – I was out for a couple of weeks and it was frustrating. No player likes to get injured and I was delighted to be back playing against Accrington. I need now need to progress and build up my fitness for the next game.
Q:AT WREXHAM YOU’VE BEEN USED AS A STRIKER AND ALSO ON BOTH FLANKS – WHICH POSITION DO YOU PREFER?
A:I have played as a striker most of my career but, yes, I have also been used on the wing. First and foremost, I want to play upfront but I realise that is not always possible. But I've got to an age where I am happy to play wherever I am asked to – and just get on with it.
