Grimsby chairman John Fenty has defended himself against criticism regarding his efforts to bring in a new manager at Blundell Park.

Fenty has been stung by doubters as he searches for a new boss and admits he feels the League Two outfit have struggled to gain sufficient support from the local council.

In a statement on the club's official website, he said: "There is only so much you can take. Yes, we have made decisions and with the benefit of hindsight they may have been chosen differently."

He added: "As it stands, they are scrutinised, and we have to accept that. I bet that if we sat down to explain the circumstances around how those decisions were made then most would agree with the logic behind them.

"To say we are looking to take the cheap option (in appointing a new manager) is grossly unfair. Whoever we appoint it is going to be expensive, whether it is an internal or external appointment.

"I also face the regular criticism that I am trying to relocate the stadium for personal gain when nothing could be further from the truth.

"Blundell Park is not acceptable in modern-day terms and to that extent the club is uneconomic and cannot compete. We need a council that speaks with one voice to tell us what they actually support and if they really want a professional football club locally or not."
