Manager Mark Stimson has revealed there has been "good contact" between Gillingham and Burnley striker Ade Akinbiyi as he looks to bring him back to Priestfield.

Akinbiyi is still a hugely popular figure at the Kent club after a superb spell between January 1997 and the summer of 1998 and is keen on a loan return to the Gills before moving abroad at the end of his Turf Moor contract this summer.

"We'd love him to come back as he'd be a force here like he was once before," Stimson said. "If it happens, it would be great but if it doesn't, we'll move on with what we have got."

"There have been good conversations. Ade wants to go abroad in the summer to play and for now, he just wants to enjoy his football and play. We've said that we'll give him the opportunity.

"He'd walk in the building and everyone would love him for what he did here before, and rightly so, and it might give us that little lift that we might need for the final push.

"It's early stages but we've had good contact."
