Down in the basement there was reason to celebrate at Rotherham as they finally cleared their points deficit at the ninth time of asking. The Millers started the campaign with a minus 17 points tally but walloped Grimsby 4-1 to move onto a solitary point and leave manager Mark Robins claiming their season would kick on from here.

Robins said: "Absolute credit to the players in the second half - it was a transformation. They came out and did exactly what we wanted them to do. We imposed ourselves on them and we knew that once we got level, we would go on and win the game - the season starts here."

Stuart McCall launched a broadside against the Bradford boo-boys after they singled out goal hero Barry Conlon during their draw with rock-bottom Luton. The Bantams slipped to sixth in the table following their draw at Valley Parade but McCall branded a section of home supporters 'scandalous' after Conlon was booed onto the field of play as a substitute with 12 minutes remaining.

He scored within two minutes of his arrival but McCall was not a happy man. "To boo him before he has got on to the pitch was scandalous," said McCall. "That hurt me more than anything - I always hate that kind of thing. I was disappointed at the crowd's reaction because he has got a Bradford shirt on and he's my player."

Meanwhile former leaders Bury slipped to second after throwing away a three goal lead as Aldershot launched an amazing comeback to salvage a point at the Recreation Ground that left manager Alan Knill licking his wounds. He said: "It does feel like a loss at the moment - we were really comfortable at 3-0 but lapses of concentration cost us.

"We said if they got a goal they would get momentum and the crowd would lift and that's exactly what happened. It's disappointing but I will take the point we've got - we're nine unbeaten and all of the other teams in the league want to be where we are."

The Shakers were replaced at the top of the pile by Wycombe who delighted manager Peter Taylor with their 3-1 triumph over Bournemouth. "The first half an hour I didn't like us but after that I thought we were excellent," said the former England Under 21 boss.

"We went on and conceded a goal in the second half but we just got stronger afterwards and that is down to the spirit and the character of the lads. I'm pleased for Matt Harrold and delighted he has got a goal - I know he's a good player and he has shut a few people up."

Sean Thornton was the toast of Shrewsbury after his wonder strike salvaged a point for the Shrews at Darlington and kept them in an automatic promotion spot. Sean's goal was an absolute stunner and I was delighted with the way that we kept our nerve and didn't lose our heads after going a goal down," said manager Paul Simpson.

"Darlington are a good side and we knew that it was going to be difficult coming here. But a point away from home is useful for us and although there is a long way to go, I am delighted so far."

Brentford boss Andy Scott wasn't happy with his side's firepower as they laboured to a 1-0 home win over Macclesfield which stretched their unbeaten run to nine games. He said: "I'm smiling now but I'd like to have been smiling just into the second half. We created a lot of good chances and could have been talking about a four or five nil win if things had gone our way.

"We looked a lot more dynamic going forward and I felt we looked good as a unit. But at the end of the day it's three points against a side who made it difficult for us and it stretches our unbeaten run."

Dagenham & Redbridge maintained their impressive start to the campaign with a 2-0 win at Rochdale whilst Exeter joined them in the play-off zone following a comprehensive 3-0 home win over Gillingham.

Notts County picked up their second consecutive victory with a 2-1 triumph at Port Vale, whilst Chesterfield stopped the rot of three straight defeats with a 2-2 draw at Morecambe to keep them in mid-table.

Lincoln continued their improvement with a 2-0 win at Chester whilst Barnet continued their climb up the table with a 2-1 home win over Accrington Stanley.
