Bournemouth midfielder Danny Hollands has been named the new captain of the side following the long-term injury to regular skipper Shaun Cooper.

The appointment may come as a surprise to some fans as just weeks earlier, Hollands threatened to leave the club following the non-payment of outstanding wages. However, the issue has since been resolved and after giving him the armband on the first day of pre-season training on Thursday, manager Eddie Howe said he believes the 23-year-old is well-suited to the role.

"I think Danny is a natural leader. Through all the problems the club has had in the past few months, he has acted as a spokesman for the players," Howe told the Bournemouth Daily Echo.

"He's taken on the role of PFA rep and I think all the players respect him and he has shown he is captain material.

"He leads by example, both on and off the pitch, and I believe he lives the right lifestyle. He's a winner and is fiercely determined to be successful."
