Kasper Schmeichel admits he shares the same for love for football as his goalkeeping father – Peter – and that pushed him to drop into League Two with Notts County.

Schmeichel – who has just named the PFA Fan’s Player of the Month for January in League Two – played a starring role on Tuesday night as the Magpies knocked Premier League Wigan out of the FA Cup.

The 23-year-old started this campaign at Manchester City but admits he isn’t yearning for the bright lights of the Premier League as he is happy to be playing regular football.

He told the Daily Mail: “I fought for two years to get away from Manchester City to play football. I could easily have stayed and lived the life but I wasn’t interested. I love football.

“Going to Notts County was a drop down but for me it’s not a sacrifice.

“He (Peter) comes to as many games as he can and we had a chat when I signed my first contract.

“He asked me what capacity I would like him as, and I said I wanted him as my dad. I didn’t want to sacrifice my relationship with him.

“I’ve watched what he used to do but I’ve watched a lot of keepers.

“I was so lucky to have been allowed to go with my dad to training and see the likes of Giggs, Beckham, Cantona and Keane and their passion for the game. It rubbed off on a kid of my age.”
