The phrase ‘highs and lows’ of the game is an over-used cliché in football but that is certainly what the Luton fans could be facing in the space of a short few days. Only last Sunday, the Hatters triumphed at Wembley to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Scunthorpe but even if Mick Harford’s men win both their forthcoming Bank Holiday matches they could still be relegated.
Despite
Luton’s hefty 30-point penalty, their supporters have been brilliant all season, with Kenilworth Road boasting the highest average attendance in League Two, while over 40,000 Luton fans turned out at Wembley to cheer their team on to a memorable victory. Givemefootball’s Mark Shail spoke exclusively with one of club’s Wembley heroes, Republic of Ireland Under 21 international Keith Keane, to get his reaction to that thrilling 3-2 win.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT NIGHT ON SUNDAY?
You could say that – it was crazy. After the game we made our way back to Luton for a function and then the players went out into the town. As you can imagine, it was a pretty late night for everyone.
DID YOU THINK IT WAS A DESERVED WIN AGAINST SCUNTHORPE?
I thought it was a fairly even game if I’m honest. They started well, particularly at the beginning of both halves, but I felt we gradually began to get on top once we grew into the game. We knew that their two strikers were always going to be a threat, along with
Grant McCann, but once we got to grips with them it enabled us to take more of a hold on the match.
THERE WERE SOME GREAT GOALS IN THE GAME?
Yes, it was just one of those games when both sides produced some memorable goals. Having said that,we have scored a lot of good goals like that this season. In some ways, I think their early goal calmed us down a bit because we just felt we had nothing to lose and played with a lot of freedom without any fear.
THE PLAYERS HAVE SHOWN GREAT SPIRIT THIS SEASON UNDER DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, HAVEN’T THEY?
Yes, it’s been a tough season for everyone but the points deduction was out of our hands and all we could do was try and win as many games as we can. Basically, we could still be relegated even if we win our next two matches but on the other hand we could still be in with a chance. From our point of view we will go out with the aim to win every game and see where it takes us.
DO YOU THINK PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IF THE CLUB ARE RELEGATED?
I haven’t got a clue, I haven’t even thought about it. Obviously, we all want to be playing in the Football League but the reality is I could be playing in the Conference next season. But while we’re still in with the shout the players will be doing all they can to stay up.
HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING WORKING WITH MICK HARFORD?
I was here when he was the assistant to Joe Kinnear a few years ago so I know him very well. He is more like a friend than a manager and is very easy to talk to. I was pleased when he got the job because I enjoy working with him and I know what he has to offer.
