Krystian Pearce is the latest young international to jump on board the PFA's growing roster of talent as he has linked up with PMA. The 18-year-old Birmingham City and England Under 18 starlet is currently on loan at Port Vale and enjoying first team football in the Potteries. Pearce also had a stint at Notts County earlier in the campaign and has played international football as well this term under the guidance of Noel Blake, which is aiding his development. Givemefootball's Ian Clarkson spoke exclusively to Pearce about his decision to sign with the PMA and life as a first team footballer at the age of 18.

Q:HOW HAVE YOU FOUND PLAYING FIRST TEAM FOOTBALL AT PORT VALE?

A:It has been a really good experience for me. I have only turned 18 this season and I already have experience of playing in League Two with Notts County as well. I had played a lot of Academy games this season and not many reserve games and the Academy manager Terry Westley said the Under 18 league wasn't stretching me enough so they arranged for me to go to Notts County.

Q:IT HAS BEEN A BAPTISM OF FIRE FOR YOU WITH PORT VALE AT THE FOOT OF LEAGUE ONE HASN'T IT?

A:As I said before, I am really enjoying the experience of playing first team football. Notts County were involved in a relegation battle too so that prepared me for what I was going to expect at Port Vale. I see it as another part of the learning curve of football and you have to be prepared to battle for things. It is also a good step up for me as I started in League Two and am now playing games in League One and there is a difference.

Q:WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 12 MONTHS TIME?

A:In 12 months I would like to see myself pushing for a first team place at Birmingham if possible. We have got a new manager now (Alex McLeish) and I have spoken to him and he is aware of me even though I am out on loan at present. I am sure playing these games will help my cause in the long run as it is all valuable experience. I am still in regular contact with Terry Westley who has been the main reason behind my success as he has had a real impact on my career since he arrived at St Andrew's.

Q:HOW DIFFICULT IS IT FOR A YOUNG PLAYER TO BREAK THROUGH AT A PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB?

A:I think it is difficult for any young centre back at any football club because of the position you play in. Any mistake could cost a goal and the manager has to trust you 100 per cent to play you and that takes time. However, I am learning all the time at Port Vale and will be a better player when I return to Birmingham for the experience.

Q:HOW IMPORTANT IN YOUR DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN PLAYING FOR ENGLAND AT VARIOUS LEVELS?

A:Playing for England is a big learning curve and a very enjoyable one. You face some excellent players and get used to playing against lots of different formations, which stands you in good stead. Noel Blake (England coach) is one of my favourite coaches and I speak to him on a regular basis. He was a centre half in his playing days and he passes on a lot of sound advice. His phone is always on and is willing to help you develop your game, which is really useful.

Q:WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SIGN WITH THE PMA?

A:My dad – Victor – had a big influence on me as he told me that you need the backing of a solid agency with your best interests at heart. We met up with the PMA and decided they were the best option. They have offered me sensible advice and not filled my head with any nonsense, which means I can just concentrate on my football, which is how it should be.
