The Football League has confirmed it is investigating the takeover of Coca-Cola League Two club Notts County.

The Magpies have been causing a stir since Middle East consortium Munto Finance bought the club this summer with the appointment of former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson as director of football and the recent signing of Sol Campbell.

Mystery surrounds who is actually behind Switzerland-based Munto Finance with executive chairman Peter Trembling, the former commercial director at Everton, fronting the consortium of investors.

The Football League has not yet rubber-stamped the takeover and is demanding to know the identity of the club's owners.

A Football League spokesman said: "We have received Fit and Proper Persons documentation. Discussions are ongoing with regard to the club's ownership structure."

County could face severe sanctions from the Football League if they continue to breach rules and fail to identify the men behind the money being injected into the club.
