Much-travelled striker Mike Sheron, a former England Under 21 star, reminded everyone at the weekend that he was still very much around and that reports of his demise had been greatly exaggerated. Sheron scored the only goal of the game that earned Macclesfield a home win over Oxford United and fifth place in League Two. It was a goal, his first of the season, that was a long time coming, as he told Brian Beard.

Q:HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT MACCLESFIELD?

A:I've been here since two days before the start of the season but I just haven't been playing in the team, and Saturday was only the second game I have started. People have been saying I haven't scored all season but if I'm not playing I can't score. It's obviously been very frustrating not being able to show people what I can do.

Q:HOW DID THE MOVE TO 'MACC' COME ABOUT BECAUSE THE LAST TIME I HEARD YOU WERE AT BLACKPOOL?

A:I was at Blackpool all last season and ended up with eight goals, in the league, and 11 in all competitions and thought I did reasonably well but Colin Hendry came in and decided he didn't want my services. I was disappointed with that but it's best to move on. I ended up with Chester, pre-season, but they had disruption so after three weeks there, two days before the start of the season, I spoke to Brian Horton and he brought me here.

Q:HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AND CONFIDENCE IN YOUR OWN ABILITY HELPED YOU THROUGH THIS AWKWARD SITUATION?

A:Possibly, everyone thinks all of a sudden my legs have gone but I feel great and fitter probably than before I went to Barnsley because I have had proper training. I know that despite not playing too many games, the training I have had has been very beneficial to me.

Q:YOU SEEM TO HAVE BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME, BUT YOU'RE NOT THAT OLD ARE YOU?

A:I am only 32 and still feel there is plenty left in me. I'm obviously frustrated but Macclesfield have given me a chance and I am now in the third month of a month-to-month contract so we'll have to wait to see what happens. I did tell the club, when I signed for this third month, if nothing happens I will move on and maybe try my luck elsewhere. I still have faith in myself even if no-one else does.

Q:HOW HIGH COULD YOU SET YOUR AMBITION, FOR INSTANCE, COULD YOU STILL DO A JOB IN THE COCA COLA CHAMPIONSHIP?

A:Of course I could, yes. You are playing with better players there so that helps and as a goalscorer you do sometimes rely on that better quality you get, the higher you play. I think, maybe pace-wise, the Premiership is asking a bit much but you never know.
