More doom and gloom for Luton

Harford's hurting - and Taylor is livid after his players lose the plot

Mick Harford was fuming after Accrington Stanley put another nail in Luton's relegation coffin at Kenilworth Road. The Hatters, who are 20 points adrift of safety, slumped to their third home defeat of the campaign and appear to be running out of time to mount a revival already.

He said: "It was hugely disappointing. We didn't start particularly well and they deserved to go 1-0 up. We looked sloppy and sluggish and didn't knock the ball around all afternoon.

"We didn't get the ball in behind them or turn them; we were edgy and looked nervous in possession. It's a bit of a low for us because we should be beating teams like this when they come down here but we don't seem to be able to do that."

Alan Knill was happy after seeing Bury bounce back from their first defeat of the season last week and replace Dagenham in second place with a 3-1 win at Victoria Road. He said: "I had been pretty disappointed in the first half though as I didn't think we were very good. I thought we could have done better and thankfully our goalkeeper was on top form.

"I think this is one of the hardest places you can come to, it was a great result. The first thing you have to do is stand up to the physical presence here and we did that. The three goals we scored were quality goals, the two wide players and two midfielders scored, so we are mixing it up a little bit."

Peter Taylor was livid despite Wycombe grabbing a point at home to Darlington with a last-gasp Scott McGleish penalty. The result keeps the Chairboys on top of the table but Chris Zebroski's sending off for aiming a punch at teammate Matt Harrold after a bad tackle from The Quakers' Tim Ryan left Taylor seething.

He said: "I didn't see the sending-off but I will see it and it could cost my player a lot of money. Whatever happened to put Chris on the floor he shouldn't have got up and reacted like that. We certainly got away with it - I think we dropped our standards and Darlington were better than us.

"I don't feel sorry for them though because you have to grab what you can and I am delighted to get a point at the end. But we didn't deserve it because we didn't play anywhere near the way that we can play, so that was very poor."

Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson refused to let his team relax as they recorded a 4-1 win over Bournemouth to take their tally of home goals to 19 from six games. "Maybe I'm being picky and maybe we've set high standards but we were a bit nervy and not as ruthless. We didn't keep possession very well and let them in for a sloppy goal," he said as Shrewsbury moved back into the top three.

"Now I want a run of eight or nine games unbeaten and to open up a gap with the leading teams. That means winning away from home and doing some things better than we did."
