Sammy McIlroy claimed that Morecambe’s five-goal beating was a real sickener.

The Shrimps crashed to a 5-1 defeat at Deepdale in the first round of the Carling Cup, and McIlroy was less than impressed with his side’s soft centre.

He told www.morecambefc.com: “The result was a real sickener. For a long time we played some great football and were well in the game.

“We had our chances but didn’t take them and you can’t afford to do that against teams from the Championship.

“At the other end though some of our defending was atrocious and we have a lot of work to do before the Burton game. I was really disappointed that we conceded goals so easily at set pieces.

“I don’t want us to play pretty football and lose every week. We need to do the uglier things better.”

Burton Albion

Paul Peschisolido criticised a ‘terrible’ first-half performance as Burton Albion were thumped at Reading in the Carling Cup.

The Brewers first foray into this competition ended in a 5-1 defeat, with Burton 4-0 down at half time.

“It was a terrible first half performance,” he told www.burtonalbionfc.co.uk.

“They’re a good side but it wasn’t even good play that broke us down it was three long balls. I’m very disappointed with the first half performance.

“I will defend players if they are beaten by the better side but today we just weren’t at the races, we made it easy for them.”
