Don't managers love it when substitutions work? Well, on Saturday Chesterfield`s Roy McFarland was delighted when he sent on the pairing of Nathan Adam Smith and Wayne Allison because the two combined to claw back a point against Torquay after the visitors led 1-0. After the game Brian Beard spoke to Nathan about the game and the point-saving goal he set up for 'The Chief'.
Q:I SUPPOSE YOU MADE A DECENT CASE FOR BEING INCLUDED FROM THE START WITH THE CONTRIBUTION YOU AND WAYNE MADE?
A:Yes, we hooked up quite well like we often do in training and it paid off with the equaliser. We're very pleased but we could have got all three points.
Q:WERE YOU SURPRISED AT HOW WELL TORQUAY PLAYED?
A:We knew what to expect because they are fighting for their lives. We expected them to defend as well as they could and they did it very well so credit them for that.
Q:IT MUST HAVE BEEN FRUSTRATING FOR CHESTERFIELD, ESPECIALLY IN THE FIRST HALF, THAT THEY WITHSTOOD EVERYTHING YOU THREW AT THEM?
A:They did indeed, the keeper did very well for them, especially in the second period, and he was the difference between the two teams.
Q:TALKING OF KEEPERS, YOURS DID VERY WELL TO KEEP YOU IN THE GAME AT 1-0?
A:Absolutely, Carl has made so many saves this season and he`s got us out of trouble on many occasions and he did exceptionally well to make the save at 1-0. It might have been a different story if they had gone 2-0 ahead.
Q:WHAT DID THE MANAGER SAY TO YOU AT HALF TIME?
A:When he sent me on he just said he wanted me to get as many crosses in as I could and make chances and try and get as many shots in as I could.
Q:AND WHAT ABOUT WAYNE? HE MAY BE 36 PUSHING 16 BUT HE CERTAINLY GOT ON THE END OF YOUR CROSS?
A:He did but that's what you get from 'The Chief'. He's always scored goals and I guess he always will.
Q:WE SPOKE ABOUT YOUR KEEPER MAKING A CRUCIAL SAVE BUT THEIR`S STOPPED A SECOND HALF HAMMERING, DIDN`T HE?
A:Yes, he made a few excellent saves and but for him we would have taken all three points.
Q:YOU`RE FLYING HIGH IN THE TABLE, SIXTH BEFORE KICK-OFF, BUT UNTIL CHESTERFIELD`S SECOND HALF PRESSURE THERE WASN`T A LOT TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE SIDES?
A:We expected a hard game from Torquay, who are near the bottom of the table, it's always a dog-fight when you play teams that are struggling.
Q:YOU ENDED UP WITH A POINT BUT BASED ON YOUR OVERALL PRESSURE, SECOND HALF ESPECIALLY, YOU SHOULD HAVE WON?
A:I agree but with their keeper doing so well I think 1-1 was a fair result in the end.
