Manager Mike Newell has responded angrily to reports that defender Ryan Bennett wants to talk to Peterborough about a possible transfer to London Road.

The Blundell Park captain still has two years remaining on his contract with the Mariners but Bennett's agent told Sky Sports News his client "would welcome the opportunity to talk to Peterborough".

In reply, Newell told Grimsby's official website: "Ryan's agent is like most agents. If the FA and Football League did their jobs properly then the game wouldn't be in the mess it is right now, and it is in a mess."

Chairman John Fenty has already made it clear that Peterborough's offer has been rejected, adding: "He's a key player and we simply won't be accepting Peterborough's derisory offer."
