Grimsby boss Mike Newell is desperately searching for new additions to his squad ahead of Saturday's visit of Gillingham.

The Mariners chief is keen to bolster his side after telling senior players Tom Newey, Phil Barnes and Gary Montgomery they were surplus to requirements prior to Tuesday's 2-1 defeat to Luton.

He told the Grimsby Telegraph: "I still want to bolster the squad and I will try to bring in players before the weekend. I am looking at all positions.

"In addition to the three who have left, Jean-Paul Kalala and Danny Boshell are injured so we are effectively five players down."

On the out-of-favour trio he added: "They are all out of contract at the end of the season and I thought it would be best to do it now rather than in the summer.

"I understand it is frustrating for players when they are not always in the team. But I need to know that everyone is pulling in the same direction even when they are not in the side. If we are going to survive that needs to be the case."
