Paul Gascoigne is set to don his football kit once again in order to help raise funds for cash-strapped Darlington. The Quakers went into administration in February and manager Dave Penney has organised a fund-raising fixture to help the club survive over the summer break.
The former England star will join ex
Newcastle,
Sunderland and
Middlesbrough stars on May 3 such as local legends such as Bernie Slaven, Kevin Ball and Marco Gabbiadini turn out for a good cause.
Fans will also be given the chance play alongside the stars, with five places being sold to the highest bidder.
Darlington will field a team plucked from its 1999-2000 play-off season to face the all-stars and Penney hopes it will go towards eating away at their reported £5m debt. He said: "This game will be fantastic entertainment and a superb end to the season. It will be a great family day out.”
Staying in League Two and Shrewsbury are hoping for a FIFA decision before the end of April to discover whether they can sign former Arsenal trainee Omer Riza.
The 29-year-old Londoner is currently banned from playing football anywhere after being banned by the Turkish Football Federation for walking out on Trabzonspor. Riza has said he had not been paid, while the club stated he left after falling out with their manager and the TFF submitted a case to FIFA this week.
Riza made one substitute appearance for the Gunners before scoring for the likes of
Barnet and Cambridge in League Two. Riza then moved to Turkish first division side Denizlispor, before he was transferred to Trabzonspor.
He has impressed Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson since arriving on trial in February but has been unable to play in official fixtures for the club.
Brighton’s Chris Birchall could be set to swap a League One relegation battle with
Brighton for the glamour of the MLS and Los Angeles Galaxy as cover for David Beckham.
According to BBC Radio Stoke The Trinidad and Tobago international has been offered a two-year deal, but it would need him to have his contract terminated by the Seagulls. The 24-year-old played in the 2006 World Cup finals and he could help fill the void left by Beckham who is on loan at AC Milan until the end of the season.
Birchall signed for Coventry City in 2006 for £300,000 from
Port Vale where he started his career, and joined Brighton in January on a free transfer.
