No wonder they say football is a funny old game! Bradford City had failed to find the net in their first four games of the season, but last weekend the Bantams rediscovered their goalscoring touch in spectacular fashion after a dramatic 5-4 victory at Cheltenham.

That win lifted Bradford to four places above the League One drop-zone, and manager Stuart McCall will be hoping the welcome victory will help kick-start the club’s campaign.

One player on target for City against the Robins was striker Gareth Evans, and the former Macclesfield player is hoping his first goal for the Yorkshire outfit is just the start of a successful stint at Valley Parade.

Q: You must have been relieved to get the first win under the belt?

A: The lads have always had confidence that we would start getting some wins, and we are always confident we will score goals. We have now done that against Cheltenham and hopefully we can kick on.

Q: And you will have been pleased to get on the scoresheet yourself?

A: Personally, it was good to get off the mark too. Every striker wants to do that as soon as possible, so I’m delighted with the goal. But the three points was the most important thing and we managed to get that from what was a really tough game.

Q: Were you surprised to be handed a starting role alongside fellow youngster James Hanson ahead of veterans Peter Thorne and Michael Boulding?

A: You are only ever going to learn from players like Michael and Peter. But I think the boss showed a lot of faith in both me and James.

I’d like to think we started repaying him with the goals we got. Hopefully there is more to come and I thought we worked well together. Everyone knows James likes to hold the ball up and flick headers on, and that allowed me to get further forward.

Q: And I suppose your aim now is to keep a place in the starting line-up?

A: Everyone wants to play football. I haven’t come here to sit around on the bench. I’ve been looking to play as much as possible and I was disappointed not to play against Notts County, if I’m honest. But now I’m in I expect to make a good contribution and play as much as possible.

Q: What are your early impressions at the club?

A: I’m really enjoying it here. The lads have been brilliant in helping me settle in and the fans have been brilliant too – speaking to me on the side and wishing me good luck for the season. I am really looking forward to this season and I can’t wait for Torquay on Saturday.
