Burton Albion's new one-month signing Marc Edworthy was like hundreds of other players at the end of last season after being released by Leicester City.
The experienced defender, who has clocked up over 500 career appearances for Plymouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry, Wolves, Norwich,
Derby and
Leicester, could have been forgiven for thinking his 20-year career was drawing to a close.
However,
Edworthy has proved there is plenty of life left in him yet and has signed an initial one-month deal with Football League new boys
Burton Albion.
And the buzz of excitement and expectation is still burning as brightly as ever within Edworthy, as Givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson discovered as he spoke exclusively to the 36-year-old ahead of tomorrow’s trip to
Shrewsbury.
Q: How did you end up at Burton Albion?
A: I know the gaffer and Gary Rowett (assistant manager) from playing with them at Derby, and it was a good opportunity for me to link up with them.
I have signed for a month initially and it will give me an opportunity to start playing again. I am hopeful that we can sort out a longer deal if all goes well in this month.
Q: The fixture list hasn't been kind to you - an opening day trip to Shrewsbury?
A: It is a tough opening fixture as they only missed out on promotion in the play-off final last season. However, we can set our stall out for the season and put in a good performance and I think that will give us a lot of encouragement for what lies ahead.
Q: How hard is it to earn a contact at the age of 36?
A: It can be difficult as people tend to stereotype you a little bit when they see your age. I am 37 in December and you continually have to prove yourself but I have no problem with that.
I know that once I get in the door I m still fit and very capable. I have got five promotions under my belt during my career and played in the Premier League so people will know what I can do by now.
Q: How much longer will you continue playing professional?
A: This could well be my last season I think. It is frustrating going for a week’s training here and there to try and earn a contract but that is what you have to do.
I am really enjoying it at Burton and the set up is fantastic, but when you have been playing week in and week out for the best part of 20 years your body does know about it!
However, I am still really enjoying going into work every day and as long as that is the case I will carry on.
