Notts County goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was the PFA League Two Fans’ Player for January and there’s a chance the coveted award could stay at Meadow Lane for another month after Country striker Lee Hughes took his seasonal tally to 22nd after bagging the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory at Grimsby at the weekend.

Caretaker boss Dave Kevan said: “Lee showed what he is about. He had missed a couple but when he’s bearing down on goal like that, chances are he’s going to score.”

Gareth Waite

Another player emerging as an early February contender is Darlington midfielder Gareth Waite, who has taken to full time professional football like a duck to water.

The 23-year-old joined Darlo from non-league Spennymoor last month and on Saturday he scored his first goal for the club and set up another in the 2-0 win against Rotherham.

Darlington assistant boss Kevin Richardson said: “Waite was fantastic. He has adapted far quicker than we expected. You could see the joy on his face when he scored. It was a great day for him – and an outstanding team performance.”

Taddgh Purcell

Taddgh Purcell was the other player on target for Darlington and he could also be popular with voters after netting his third goal in four games since arriving at the club.

John O'Flynn and Gavin McCallum

Meanwhile, Barnet manager Ian Hendon was a relieved man after his side finally halted their 13-game winless streak, with striker John O’Flynn the hero for the Bees after netting a double.

Like O’Flynn for Barnet, Hereford fans are no doubt singing the praises of frontman Gavin McCallum after he hit his third goal in two games after scoring the winner against Torquay on Saturday.

Wayne Brown

Finally, Bury have not conceded a goal for over 270 minutes and goalkeeper Wayne Brown deserves a big pat on the back for that stat.

Brown made a number of fine saves in the 1-0 win at Bradford at the weekend, including a brilliant stop to deny Luke O’Brien. Shakers’ boss Alan Knill said: “That’s three clean sheets on the trot. We look solid as a team.”
