Celtic and Rangers have been told to forget about trying to sign Scotland new boy George Boyd - because they cannot afford him.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry claims both Old Firm teams have been sending scouts to his club's matches on a regular basis to check out 23-year-old winger Boyd. But Fry warned it would take £5million to land the player, who was on Thursday called into the Scotland squad for Wednesday night's B international against Northern Ireland.

Fry told the Daily Express: "Celtic have been sending scouts to our games for some time and I know that Darren (Ferguson, Peterborough manager) spoke to (Rangers boss) Walter Smith about George. I don't know how far that has gone, but I can tell you right now that we would only sell George if an offer of silly money came in."

He added: "Right now, I don't think that kind of silly money exists in Scotland.

"We've been saying to Premier League clubs interested that George can go if we get an offer of £5million, but I don't think it will happen.

"There has been no official contact with Celtic or Rangers in terms of concrete offers being made, but they've had scouts at our games in recent weeks as well.

"In fact, I'd say there will be a scout from one of those two clubs at nine out of every 10 games we play."

Meanwhile, Fry also revealed Scotland boss George Burley had been keeping tabs on Posh striker Craig Mackail-Smith, who has scored 25 goals this season.

Burley selected Boyd this week after the player was able to prove he had a Scottish-born grandfather and Fry believes Mackail-Smith also has a heritage north of the border.

He said: "I can't say for sure what the family connection is, but I do believe Craig is eligible for Scotland and that George Burley has been watching him."
