Alan Knill saw Bury's unbeaten record go up in smoke but the Shakers' boss refused to condemn his players after Exeter's shock win at Gigg Lane. The Grecians returned south with all three points following Richard Logan’s goal as Bury dropped to fourth in the table.
"I thought we played pretty well, we just gave them something to hold on to after seven minutes and they did," said Knill. "They scored the goal, weren't the most adventurous and in the last 25 minutes they hardly came out of their half. We had plenty of chances but that final pass or final shot just wasn't there for us - sometimes you have days like this but it is something we've got to get better at.
"It is frustrating but we can't be too despondent - we just have to take it on the chin and move on. One loss in ten is pretty good and we'd have taken fourth place in the table now at the start of the season."
John Still was celebrating as his Dagenham side leap-frogged Bury into second after a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Barnet. "In the second half I thought we were absolutely outstanding," he said. "The movement of the players was outstanding and on another day, I think we might have got a goal or two more.
"Local derbies are always hard games to win, especially after we have had such a tough week at Rochdale and Peterborough. The back four was excellent once more and I'm very pleased with how everything is going."
Stuart McCall was a mightily relieved man as Bradford got their campaign back on track thanks to a stunning comeback against Accrington Stanley. The Bantams scored three goals in the last ten minutes to win a five-goal thriller and move into third position in League Two.
"I was fearing the worst - I thought it was going to be a dreadful October and a depressing weekend but the players have pulled it out for us," said McCall. "With 15 minutes to go we were despondent and the fact we won is still sinking in. I thought we were soft but they have proved me wrong.
"We showed great desire and fight and they were quality goals. When you have players like Barry Conlon, Michael Boulding and Peter Thorne on the pitch you have always got a chance."
Wycombe stay top of the pile and unbeaten for good measure after Leon Johnson's late equaliser ruined Mike Newell's first home game in charge at Grimsby. "I thought we deserved something from the game, and we could have had more goals," said Chairboys' boss Peter Taylor. "I knew the last thing we wanted to do was give them a goal start. Mike gets introduced to the crowd and before he has sat down they are 1-0 up. Thankfully we got one back at the end."
Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson wasn't happy with Port Vale's tactics after the League two strugglers struck a late winner to leave his men in fifth position. He said: "Vale were quoted in the local papers this week as saying they would win ugly, and they certainly came and were aggressive. We never believed we would go through the whole of the season without conceding a goal at home so now we will have to bounce back against Bournemouth next week but that will also be a difficult game."
Down in the basement and it is looking like mission impossible for Luton after a 2-1 home defeat to Darlington whilst Bournemouth and Rotherham are still in trouble after a goalless draw on the south coast.
Gillingham'sopsy-turvy campaign took a turn for the better as they slammed Morecambe 5-0 in a performance that left manager Mark Stimson purring. He said: "If you get eight or nine players on their game then you have got a great chance of winning and that is what we had. Since I have been here, that is the best result and it's certainly up there in terms of performance. The boys have all worked really hard. They put it in and did what we have asked of them and they got their rewards. There were some excellent performances all round."
Aldershot's honeymoon is definitely over a 4-2 defeat at Macclesfield left boss Gary Waddock livid. "I can't take any positives out of the day at all," he said. "We had most of the possession in the first half, but if you can't create any chances and fail to convert those you do create then you are just going to do nothing. This just wasn't us at our best. All credit to Macc, they deserved the win."
Chesterfield and Chester shared two goals at Saltergate whilst Rochdale and Lincoln produced the same scoreline at Sincil Bank on Friday night. Finally, Brentford face Notts County tonight in a live televised fixture with the Bees knowing a win would propel them into second position.
