Gillingham youngster Luke Rooney has agreed a one-year professional contract with the club.

The 18-year-old midfielder scored 12 times for the Gills' youth team this season and has been involved in the first-team squad on a few occasions, although he is yet to make his debut.

Mark Stimson hopes he can press for a first-team spot next season, saying: "Luke is technically a good player. He's busy, he gets around the pitch and he's got an eye for goal."

He added: "We'll be looking for him to come back in pre-season and fight for a first-team place."

Rooney made six Blue Square Premier appearances while on work experience with Lewes at the end of the season.
