After being released by a lower division club at the age of 37, most players would be seriously considering calling it a day. Not Alan Wright.
After giving
Cheltenham two years’ excellent service, the former
Villa left back is on the look-out for a new club, and the old legs don’t show any signs of giving up on him just yet.
Alan, who played at the top level with
Blackburn, Aston Villa,
Middlesbrough and
Sheffield United, reckons he’s got another season in him at least.
He said: “I played in virtually every position last year – apart from in goal! I played around 30 games and I had earmarked that as a figure in pre-season.
“I felt as though I could have played even more games and as long as I still feel fit and capable and feel able to give something back then I want to carry on.”
Still fit as a fiddle and carrying no extra weight, the diminutive full back adds: “In my mind I am still more than capable of doing a job in League One, but whether someone else agrees with me is another matter.
“I still feel fit and can offer a lot to a club but I need to convince a manager.”
You played through the pain batter a bit to help the team last season, was that wise?
“I played towards the end of the season with a calf injury and didn’t do myself any favours. The team were struggling for bodies with injuries and I helped them out and tore it again, which didn’t help.
“However, you always want to play so you sometimes think with your heart and not your head and you are always learning – even at the age of 37.”
So what about his future plans for when he does finally hang up the boots?
“I am taking the first part of my A Licence this summer. If I could get a player-coach role next season then that would be ideal.
“I would like to stay in the Football League but would be prepared to go into the Blue Square Premier as it is a route I want to go down. However, I know there are quite a few people who are looking at similar roles so I would like to get an opportunity.”
