Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson and his Posh players can taste promotion after holding off the spirited challenge of Stockport at London Road on Saturday. Craig Mackhail-Smith’s 25th goal of the season means United’s destiny is still in their own hands, leaving MK Dons to play catch-up. But there’s still plenty to play for at the top of League One.
Ferguson's men need to win at
Colchester next Saturday and beat Swindon at London Road on May 2 to be sure of going up...and here he lets us know his thoughts on the run-in...
HOW ARE THE NERVES IN THE POSH CAMP?
Promotion is getting closer by the game and we can taste it now. This was obviously a crucial win, but I was particularly impressed by the way we achieved it. It was only 1-0 in the end, but we were worthy winners. Some of the football the lads produced in the first half was outstanding considering the pressure of the occasion.
STOCKPORT GAVE IT A GOOD GO THOUGH?
I knew
Stockport would fight back in the second half and although they hit the bar they never threatened us after that. Some of our finishing was a bit wayward, but it's all about results at this stage of the season so it was a good day for us.
HOW DO YOU VIEW THE LAST FEW GAMES?
Millwall are out of the running now, but
MK Dons just won't go away. We had a great rivalry with them last season and it's been the same again this season. I have always felt it would go down to the last weekend and I am convinced that will be the case, but our destiny is in our own hands and you can't ask for more than that. Two more performances like this one will see us home and dry.
DO YOU FEEL THE PLAYERS ARE COPING WELL WITH THE PRESSURE?
You can have all the ability and play all the football in the world, but you still need the right temperament. The players and team with the right mentality will get over the line at this stage of the season and we believe we have it.
HOW DID YOU LIFT THE PLAYERS AFTER THE DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT AND PERFORMANCE AGAINST MILLWALL?
You cannot leave players moping around after a result and performance like the one we gave on Monday. That's why we picked them up at the first opportunity and it was a positive meeting. We spoke about what happened at Millwall and were all in agreement that our standards have dropped. We touched on what is required during the remaining part of the season and the day ended a lot better than how it had begun.
