In the Hot Seat: Paul Sturrock - Plymouth
Plymouth Argyle boss working behind the scenes to bring in new players
Plymouth have made a slow start to the season, with just two points from their first four games of the season, although Saturday's goalless draw at Burnley was a satisfactory result for the Pilgrims. However, Argyle have scored just twice so far in the league, with both those goals coming on the opening day of the season, and manager Paul Sturrock admits his side's goal drought is a concern. New signings Paul Gallagher and Craig Noone both made their debuts against the Clarets at the weekend but, as givemefootball's Mark Shail discovered, Sturrock is working hard behind the scenes to bring in more recruits, possibly on loan.
WERE YOU RELATIVELY PLEASED WITH THE POINT AT BURNLEY?
The essence is to draw your away games and win your home games. We have now got to sort our home for out. We have got a lot of players who are still finding their feet in the Championship.
ARE YOU CONCERNED WITH THE LACK OF GOALS?
We have got to get this team thinking about scoring goals. We haven't scored in our last four games. That is a little un-nerving but it was a solid performance against Burnley.
WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF STRIKER PAUL GALLAGHER'S PERFORMANCE AFTER JOINING THE CLUB ON LOAN FROM BLACKBURN?
He tried dramatically in the game and he has only played a couple of reserve games but I thought he played really well in the first hour and if we can get him really fit he's going to be a good asset. I was looking for that type of player who can adapt to playing through the middle, off the front, or out wide. When I weighed up all the choices he came top of the list and I was very pleased with his reponse to wanting to come here.
AND HOW DID WINGER CRAIG NOONE ADAPT TO LIFE IN THE FOOTBALL LEAUE AFTER SIGNING FROM NON-LEAGUE SOUTHPORT?
I think it was culture shock for the laddie. He was tiling two weeks ago, getting up at six in the morning. All of a sudden he's playing in the Championship. It's a lot to ask. Nervous tension was definitely a feature in him, but he had a go. A plate of mince and a few tatties a day wouldn't go a miss on him. He's a game wee laddie. He's got a lot of potential and he's quick as well. We are pleased with him.
BUT IT'S STILL VERY MUCH EARLY DAYS IN THE SEASON, ISN'T IT?
We are a team still finding our feet at this minute in time and it's going to be a long, hard slog to get ourselves into the finished article. We are not going to be that in one season but, hopefully, we will learn as we go along.
ARE YOU HOPING TO MAKE ANY MORE SIGNINGS?
AI do feel rushing into things has cost a lot of clubs dear in the past and I want to slow things down now. I would like to pursue the reserve leagues and other games around the country. Once we get into September and October I might find the players who I think will adapt to us – they would have to come on loan first, obviously. Taking it into October means you can take them on loan for three months and then when you get into the next transfer window you can do something about it. It's a far more sensible idea than us going chasing our tails and making mistakes.
