Saint's legend Ron will be on the mend soon

Southampton legend Ron Davies is due to undergo a much-needed hip operation in the States in the next month - thanks, largely, to the help of Saints' fans who remember his goalscoring exploits to this day.

Davies, now living in New Mexico USA, has fallen on hard times and has been unable to work because of a hip problem so Saints' fans lent a hand to raise £10,000 to enable him to undergo a operation.

Davies, who scored 153 goals for Southampton in 277 appearances between 1966 and 1973, paid tribute to the fans recently when he said: "I just want to say to the Saints' fans I am so proud to have played for you.

"It is my left hip which is the leg I used to take off with and I remember Dr Ramsey telling me when I was 25 that I would not be able to walk by the time I was in my fifties of sixties. At the time I didn't think anything of it because I was young and all I wanted to do was play football and score goals for Southampton.

"But he was right. I am really struggling with it now and I just want the Saints' fans to know I really appreciate what they are doing. I always knew they were special when I was playing but to think they still remember me after all these years and that they are prepared to help, that just shows how incredible they are."

Eighty per cent of the costs for the operation will be funded by the State of New Mexico, whilst the PFA have also been in touch with Davies and his wife and are offering financial assistance through our Accident Fund.

NOTE: At the PFA awards on Sunday, a photo of Ron was mistakenly shown on the screen whilst we were paying tribute to another former Saints' player who shares the same name. Former Cardiff, Southampton and Aldershot full back Ron Davies sadly passed away in December.
