Sweden v Belarus was the third of 15 matches to be played at four venues across Sweden as the cream of Europe’s young footballers sought to be crowned UEFA Under 21 Champions.

It proved to be a comprehensive victory for the host nation, who ran out comfortable 5-1 winners thanks to an excellent display of attacking football – and clinical finishing.

The PFA Coaching Team are in Sweden, observing and reporting on the tournament. For Jim Hicks Head of the Department, visits to tournaments such as this in Sweden are invaluable for the development of the PFA’s coaches and the credibility of the courses they deliver.
Overall for Hicks and his team of coaches it has been a fascinating and worthwhile study visit. ‘Stars of today, superstars of tomorrow” is the hosts claim for the tournament but with the knowledge gained by the PFA Coaches it’s hoped that the coaches of tomorrow are the ones who will gain just as much from the visit.

Here’s their latest report....

Sweden Technical Report

Sweden’s  attacking  strategy  was  organized  and  at  times  very  slick.  They  played  a  4‐4‐2  formation  with  the  forward  Ola  Toivonen  (7)  playing  a  little  deeper  off  Marcus  Berg  (9).  These  two  players  showed  real  imagination  in  their  play often  linking  up  well  together  with  exciting  combination  play  and  good  forward  movement.

Belarus Technical Report

Belarus maintained the same shape and style throughout the match, never straying from the opening script. There
did not appear to be a ‘Plan B’. The substitutions they made were like‐for‐like, but those joining the game looked
technically better and brought some much‐needed spirit and mobility to a struggling side.
