How can you fall out of love with football?

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink could find a happy hunting ground at non-league Woking

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink probably didn’t envisage going on trial at Woking at any stage of his career, but the former Chelsea and Leeds United striker is more than happy to train with the Cards whilst searching for fitness.

Currently playing in the Blue Square Premier South division, Woking won’t be a glamorous port of call for Hasselbaink but the love of football can sometimes mean bizarre marriages.

Teddy Sheringham and Beckenham Town are unlikely partners, but the 43-year-old has come out of retirement to aid their FA Vase campaign.

Sheringham retired in 2008, but Town chairman Chris McCarthy claimed the evergreen striker is enthusiastic about returning to the game.

McCarthy and the three-time Premier League title winner have struck up a friendly relationship over the past few years, and the playing agreement is reported to be a consequence of that bond. The pair had spoken about the possibility of Sheringham returning to football since the start of the season.

He told the club’s official website: "We were all thrilled that Teddy took time out to phone at half-time on Saturday to see how we were getting on in our Vase tie against Wealden [a 6-0 victory for Town]. It's a great time for the club and the local football community."

However, it hasn’t always been a bed of roses as Steve Claridge discovered on returning to take over as player-manager of Weymouth with journalist Ian Ridley as chairman and a documentary team following him round to boot.

It ended less than harmoniously but the bug has bitten Claridge again and, at the ripe old age of 43, he agreed to turn out for free last month as he played for the Terras once more.

Chris Waddle is totally infatuated with football to such an extent that even now he can be found occasionally turning out for Devonshire Arms FC in the Sheffield Imperial League.

After reaching the World Cup semi-finals with England in 1990 Waddle could still be seen turning out a decade later for the likes of Worksop Town, Glapwell and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

There are plenty of other names plying their trade on the non-league scene such as Andy Legg and Garry Parker, and undoubtedly there will be many more ahead as the love drug known as football continues to attract many converts.
